July 5th to 7th have been really busy days for the capital of Azerbaijan, when 20 teams and drivers from 10 Countries reached the shores of the Caspian Sea, right on Baku Boulevard and made up a great show on water.
On Saturday the F2 catamarans were in the water for the Speed Record contest, won by the Swede Eric Stark with an impressive 182 Kph, and then Match Race with a head-to-head competition that saw Johan Osterberg, again from Sweden, win the final over the twice World Champion Jonas Andersson, racing for the Azerbaijan Team.
Then on Sunday a 40-laps race entertained thousands of people who came on site attracted by the thrill of power and speed. And the show was really at its top: after a start dominated by the Scandinavian drivers Stark, Andersson and Osterberg, with the Italian Paolo Zantelli and the Latvian Ulvis Slakteris to fight against them, the capsizing of two boats required the yellow flag twice. Safety was a main concern from the very beginning, so luckily no harm at all occurred to the drivers Stefan Hagin, Germany, and Bimba Sjoholm, Norway. Two restarts then, with the fastest drivers fighting closely for the top positions.
The 2011 and 2012 World Champion Erik Stark, who at a stage of the race was back in seventh position, fought like a hero and finally was able to clinch the victory. A good second position honored the hosting Country with Jonas Andersson from the Azerbaijan Team, with Slakteris to complete the podium.
